Today is the day we finally head out on our Spring Break trip. We haven’t been travelling for a while and we’ve both been missing it. This month marks one year since Steve’s surgery, and we felt like this was a fitting celebration!
We left at what I like to call dark o’clock, to catch our first of two flights. We tried to organize a taxi, but learned that Sidney Taxi (we think it might just be one car) doesn’t work in the middle of the night and cab companies from Victoria don’t want to come out to Sidney in the middle of the night to pick you up at 3:15 in the morning just to take you the five minute drive to the airport… and yes, when we checked in online it told us that we did, in fact, have to be at the airport at 3:30 AM. For those of you also taking the 5:30 out of YYJ to YYC, the Westjet counter does start operating at 3:45… and surprisingly there were A LOT of people there before us!
Luckily, we have kind friends. We drove our own car to the airport and left it in the parking lot. They picked it up later in the day and drove it home for us, so we didn’t have to pay for two weeks of airport parking! Thank you Murray! 🩷
Our flights were uneventful and we arrived in Fort Lauderdale 20 minutes early. It was still light out when we arrived which, I guess, is the advantage of leaving so early in the morning.
We checked into our hotel, The Costa Hollywood Beach Resort, after an “interesting” taxi ride… I think we might switch to using Uber when we are in the US. The taxi left a lot to be desired, the driver tried to take us to a different hotel and seemed genuinely clueless in general. Nevertheless, we got where we wanted at what I expect was twice the cost of what an Uber would have been.
The hotel was a bit run down in the hallways, but the room was nice, modern and clean and the hotel had an incredible rooftop pool. It was also steps from the beach and the Hollywood Broadwalk, (Side-note: that is not a spelling mistake) which is a 2.5 mile long lovely path along the ocean front with many restaurants, bars, and shops lining the way.
At this point we were feeling very hungry (I want to say starving… but the vocabulary police…aka the Handsome Man says we aren’t actually starving… just hungry…perhaps he would allow me to say ravenous?) so we headed out along the broadwalk to find something to eat with a view of the ocean. We were spoiled for choices and ended up at a restaurant with forgettable food and a spectacular view of the ocean.
To end our long travel day we had a nice walk back to our hotel along the broadwalk.
