Who We Are

We are a couple of elementary school teachers who have been married for 35 years.

We believe in enjoying life, and travel every chance we get.

Self-described princesses, we are mid-range travellers. We travel as cheaply as we can,

but with rules.

1) We don’t share a bathroom with strangers (we certainly don’t stay in the hostel where

you use the bathroom bus in Bangkok)

2) We need a clean bed, and we rarely eat off food carts. Sure we’d like to stay in expensive

places… but until we win the lottery that won’t be happening very often!

3) We love to be warm, and tend to follow the sun on our travels (You won’t find any posts

about visiting the North Pole here!)

We started this blog mostly to help preserve the memories. (The older we get the more we forget…)

We also want to keep our family and friends informed so they know we’re safe

(why wouldn’t we be… we don’t do crazy stuff?!?)

Finally, it amuses me to write, if it amuses you to read it, then welcome :).

First Day in Gozo

Every time we come to Gozo we have to take a photo in front of the "Marta" house. Many houses in Malta have names... and this one... which happens to be on the same street that we are staying... has OUR name on it. That must be a sign right? Our first day in Gozo was pretty relaxed. We spent most of the day trying to acclimate to the time (not very successfully I might add!) The temperature here is pretty hot right now. The high is about 35 degrees celsius and it is only going down to about 25 in the night. Thank goodness for air conditioning. Here's a travel tip for you... if you come to Malta in the summer do NOT book a place without aircon! When we finally went out... we went for a walk down to see the gym Steve wants to join for the summer. Of course it was closed because today is a public holiday for the feast of St. Peter and Paul. It's Finally Happening: First plane ride in three years!

Well it's finally happening! We took our first plane ride in three years! I know I'm stating the obvious... but Covid threw a giant enormous stinky wrench into our recent travel plans. We decided that our first trip would be to our favourite place... Malta! When we decided we weren't sure what Covid measures would look like so decided just to go to one small place and stay there for the whole 7 weeks. We weren't sure whether there would be quarantines or testing... so 1 location made sense. We also had the luxury (did you hear me say luxury, Steve Marta??? We can NOT afford to travel this way every time.) of flying business class. I had about a jillion avion points racked up and we used them to pay for part of our business class tickets. We left. Victoria and flew to Calgary on Westjet. They don't have business class, so we were put in "premium economy", which on our tiny plane (2 seats on each side of the aisle) meant you sat near the front with a bit mor...

The Princesses Go Camping

Camping and Princesses are two words that don’t usually go together. However, the Handsome Man and I decided to try out camping anyway. We had several reasons for trying this experiment, but I’ll just tell you the top three: 1) We had gone camping and enjoyed it before…that was about 20 years ago though! 2) We are doing research for our year off. Currently, with our fluid and ever-changing plans, we are wondering if we can camp for a month driving down the coast. We are both unsure of this plan! 3) For financial reasons (AKA strike!) we were unable to go to Europe this summer and instead had to resort to camping in Nanaimo. That being said we saw several European people camping in Nanaimo, so have deduced it is probably the grass is always greener theory 😀 We researched before we left (of course!!) to try to find a nice camping spot not too far from the King’s parents place in Ladysmith. A Weekend in Valletta

We decided to take a vacation from our vacation and spend a weekend in Valletta. Remember Malta has two main islands and we like to stay on Gozo because it is the quieter island. When you are ready for a little more action, it is easy to take the ferry over to the main island of Malta. This time we elected to stay in Valletta. I personally think it is the most beautiful city in Malta. This time we took the fast ferry. It leaves directly from Mgarr Harbour and drops you off right at the Valletta harbour. This means you no longer have to take a long bus or taxi ride to get to Valletta. Here I am enjoying my ferry right on the fast cat. When you arrive, you are down at the harbour and Valletta (the walled city) is WAY UP! With your ferry fare they give you a little ticket to take the lift for free. Even if you don't have the free ticket it is worth the one euro fee. This is how high the lift is... On our first day we enjoyed walking the streets of Valletta. Here is a picture of the ...

Mayne Island - A Relaxing Getaway in the Gulf Islands

We had a couple of weeks off from our Queen's math courses, so decided to do 2 short trips to places we are "allowed" to travel to. Our first stop was Mayne Island. Why Mayne you ask? Well, we'd never been, and like to see new things. Even though Covid foiled our plan of seeing many new countries there are still many beautiful places we can explore close to home. The Mayne Island Welcome Statue carved by local First Nation's artist John Aitken. We decided to stay at the Mayne Island Resort. There are not many choices on Mayne, and this one was oceanfront and looked nice. For the first two days we stayed in a King room in the main hotel. This was built in 1912 (and smells like an old house... you know what I mean right?) The rooms were perfectly fine, but small. Nothing fancy, but you do have a balcony overlooking the ocean. Almost Ready to Go

Well we've had a long but very fun week of finishing up work stuff, packing our things into a storage locker, negotiating what will fit into our backpacks and saying good-bye to friends and family. We are so grateful for the excellent friends and family that have made us feel so special this week… we’re really going to miss you… not enough to stay mind you ;) We’ve included some pictures of the highlights of our last week. If you’re not there it doesn’t mean you weren’t a highlight! Random Thoughts About Whistler

As part of our "staying close to home" vacation, we have decided to visit some places in beautiful British Columbia, that we haven't had a chance to visit yet. One of these places is Whistler. We were pleasantly surprised to find out it is only 120 km from Vancouver. We both thought it would be farther. Based on some excellent advice from my mom, I took a motion sickness tablet for the drive up. (Strongly recommended if you are prone to car sickness.) The drive is beautiful! For a large part of it you see the ocean to your left and the mountains all around you. It is a beautiful winding road... especially beautiful if you are lucky enough to be riding up in a convertible in the sunshine! Whistler is a beautiful resort town. Perfect for people who like nature and resorts! An excellent mix 😀 There are plenty of biking trails, lakes, hikes and a multitude of shopping and restaurants available. Gozo - The Feast of St. George and other random thoughts

Steve and I have at last recovered from our summer colds... it always happens after school ends. Luckily we made it here before getting sick! I was worried we'd both get it before we left and then they wouldn't let us on the plane. Honestly, we just kept saying to each other "Don't relax yet!" so we could put it off until we got here. All is well now and we are both feeling good again 😀 Obviously, with Covid restrictions now, we stayed home while we were sick... so we became very closely acquainted with the two rooms in our apartment! And of course... I didn't have much to report. Don't worry, I'm not feeling sad about missing two weeks... we have seven glorious weeks here! Our Last Day in London

August 10, 2023 Today was a very low key day. I'm tired you guys! The morning was spent doing laundry. This laundromat was MUCH cheaper than the one in Iceland. I think the Iceland one is the current record holder for most expensive laundromat so far! We went for lunch at St. Katharine's Docks which is near our hotel and a lovely area. St. Katharine's Docks is currently a residential, commercial and leisure area with many restaurants with fine views. It was originally the site of a hospital "St. Katharine's by the Tower", which was built in the 12th century. Over the years it had a variety of shipping uses, but was devastated by bombings in WWII. Now it is a lovely area for a walk and some lunch! Next we went for a short walk past the tower bridge to sit by the river. There are plenty of benches to sit on, and Steve loved buying these nuts coated in sugar and some other secret ingredients. I think you might call them candied nuts? Last, Steve went for a little...

Our Three Favourite Things we did in Whistler - July 17, 2020

My last blog post about Whistler thrilled you with my random thoughts... hopefully 😀😁 This post is going to be about our three favourite things we did this time in Whistler. As in a true top 10 list (with only three things on it!) we are going to count down to our favourite. #3 - The Peak 2 Peak Gondola I think this is a classic Whistler experience that you have to do at least one time. Basically you take the Gondola up Whistler mountain. Then take another gondola between Whistler and Blackcomb mountains. Then take another Gondola down Blackcomb mountain. You could also go in the other direction if you are so inclined. Fun fact : Did you know that the Peak 2 Peak holds a Guinness World Record for the longest unsupported span for a lift of this kind? The span is 4.4 km long! That makes it sound kind of scary and unsafe doesn't it??? Well don't worry. I'm terrified of heights and this was definitely not the scariest thing I've done!
