Haiti

A Girl Named Lovely: One Child's Miraculous Survival and my Journey to the Heart of Haiti

By Catherine Porter. My score 4/5. Read in January 2021.

I enjoyed this memoir. I kept questioning why she was trying to keep herself separate, and as I kept reading, I realized it came from a smart, rational place. I tend to lead with emotions, and I did receive her message that this is not necessarily the most helpful thing in a situation like this. I thought her writing was excellent, and really enjoyed the glimpse into her journey. I will be sharing this book with my friends!

Honduras

Hungary

When the Summer was Ours

By Roxanne Veletzos. My score 4/5. Read in February 2022.

I enjoyed this book, and was interested to read about how the war affected Hungarians. I was not expecting to find out about how it also impacted the Romani people, and found this quite fascinating. It feels like this part  of the war isn't really talked about. On this front I found the book very interesting. I enjoyed the story but found it a bit frustrating. I haven't lived in times like this so don't know if it's realistic but it felt like the constraints of society had everyone making ridiculous choices. I just wanted them to be together.
